This is for those of you out there who still don't believe that Global Warming is a real, scientifically-verified fact that has already begun affecting the lives of people on this earth drastically.
It is also for those of you who just want to listen and take a moment of social responsibility. Also for you to pass along to those who are still in need of conversion.
Before you get too carried away with your "Global Warming", please read this: http://www.newsmax.com/archives/articles/2007/2/14/151325.shtml?s=al&promo_code=2DA2-1
ReplyDeleteThis makes more sense to me than Global Warming. I agree that we can do a lot better at taking care of our planet, but I'm still not convenced about Global Warming.
Lucy--
ReplyDeleteI respect your opinion completely. But.
Increased snowfall is actually a sign of global warming. Change in weather patterns of any kind is a symptom. And I read the article-- but I haven't heard of too many studies that verify the facts, but I have heard of multiples studies that have verified the effect that co2 emissions has been having on our current rate of climate change. I'm actually ecstatic now that the scientific community has, by and large, accepted global warming as Truth. Hooray! now we can get to work on fixing things (hopefully. or at least halt and/or slow our current rate of temperature rise).
Nosurf - our planet periodically goes through warming and cooling cycles, and has for eons. The question is not whether we are now in a warming cycle, but to what extent is the current warming caused by human activity or by other factors, such as increased solar radiation.
ReplyDeleteGlobal warming is also currently taking place on Pluto and Mars. Are we going to blame SUVs for that?
Garry--
ReplyDeleteI know that lots of people use the natural cycles of warming of the earth (and other planets) as a reason to go on buying SUV's. Yes, warming and cooling cycles have happened for eons. And yes, they happen on other planets. No dispute there.
But does it necessarily follow that we shouldn't be worried about the way that our CO2 emissions are artifically speeding the process? That would be like saying, "well, we're all gonna die someday, so I might as well keep smoking."
The artificial acceleration of global warming has devastating effects on our environment (the plants, animals, and people who live in the areas that are being affected), because it's happening too rapidly for people/animals/plants to be able to adapt adequately. Normally, they WOULD have eons of time in which to refine their lifestyle, perhaps migrate slowly to another spot on the globe or find other ways to find water, or explore newer, safer routes through the glacial rivers and islands of the arctic. If you'll listen to the link I put up, you'll hear some examples of this.
Thank you both for commenting, though. It's good for me to be able to put things in a more articulate (less emotion-based) way.
oh and I also wanted to say that it's an undisputed fact that Co2 and other greenhouse gasses causes warming. In fact, greenhouse gasses ( a certain amount) are vital to life on earth for this very reason. And so it is also an undisputed fact that a huge inflation in the amount of greenhouse gasses would cause a rise in temperature. I have no idea how people could postulate otherwise. Here's a nice Nova link.
ReplyDeleteI've read quite a bit about the various theories....and I think humans the past 100 years have damaged the earth and we're just now realizing the consequences. Global warming is real.
