When my friends somehow find out (probably the series of bumper stickers on my poop covered intrepid) that I'm an Obama supporter, these are the two things I hear after all the normal silliness about fascism and dictatorships and socialism etc etc.
Misnomer # 1) Obama wants to kill lots of babies.
Quote: "Obama supports abortion rights but says the procedure should be rare." Full text Here.
Sounds to me like it's not imcompatible with this, other statement:
"Church leaders have said that some exceptional circumstances may justify an abortion, such as when pregnancy is the result of incest or rape, when the life or health of the mother is judged by competent medical authority to be in serious jeopardy, or when the fetus is known by competent medical authority to have severe defects that will not allow the baby to survive beyond birth. But even these circumstances do not automatically justify an abortion. Those who face such circumstances should consider abortion only after consulting with their local Church leaders and receiving a confirmation through earnest prayer." Full text here.
Misnomer #2: Obama is pro gay marriage.
I don't understand where anyone comes up with this. Obama has actually caught a lot of heat from the more liberal elements of his party (and from his GLBT constituents), for his stance on gay marriage, which is this:
Although Barack Obama has said that he supports civil unions, he is against gay marriage. In an interview with the Chicago Daily Tribune, Obama said, "I'm a Christian. And so, although I try not to have my religious beliefs dominate or determine my political views on this issue, I do believe that tradition, and my religious beliefs say that marriage is something sanctified between a man and a woman."

So, with that off my chest...
is anyone else absolutely thrilled at the nomination of Gov. Huntsman as ambassador to China? Not only because Huntsman will make a GREAT chinese ambassador (speaks fluent Mandarin, has an adopted chinese daughter, close ties with the culture) and is another example of Mormon Stellar Politician put in the political spotlight but...
because Obama picked him. Even though he was co-chairman of John McCain's Presidential campaign.
I'm sad to see Huntsman go as governor. But Barack, you have earned some more love from me. I might not agree with you entirely on fiscal matters, but as a person, I admire you and as a politician, I admire the way you've lived up to your promise to try to "reach across party lines." As someone completely disenchanted by both parties, I can appreciate your lack of willingness to toe the line in every instance, and to reach across it to bring talent to your presidency.
*OK, done gushing now.*

OK, Sarah....you and me, we're like THIS (imagine me holding up my two first fingers close together). You just stated my sentiments exactly. Thank you for reminding me that there are some like-minded people in Utah County. And yeah....this whole socialism broo-ha-ha is starting to get really old.
Sarah and "A fear of flying" Obama IS pushing Socialism.... I don't trust the man farther than I could throw him... Does Universal Health Care ring a bell? You will curse till the day you die, if that ever comes about. We will get substandard care for everyone and waiting lists beyond compare. Why do you think people from Canada and England come to the US for care? Maybe you will change your tune, if for mother were to come down with breast cancer and she is put on a waiting list, for a year, to get surgery or treatment.... Enough said.
1) He believes in late term abortion... If the baby "accidentally" happens to live, his stance is to put it to the side and let it die....He says, "Isn't that the reason for the abortion?" He is the most Liberal president ever when it comes to abortion...
2) Obama does very little to put his hands across the isle. He wants to bring about the "fairness doctrine" to stifle the conservative voices... If you don't believe Obama's way, then he wants to shut you up. He is doing his best to "change" the Constitution to believe what he wants.
OK, you had your rant, now I've had mine..... Sorry dear, we disagree.
Lucy,
we don't agree on politics, but there's lots we do agree about. I won't worry too much about your rants if you don't worry too much about mine :)
Sarah... I agree. I'm so glad I'm not the only heretic non-super-radical-rightwing-conservative-homeschooling-mom in Utah Valley!
See... that was a vent. haha. Don't tell.
I'm not fond of many of Obama's stances, bit I do admire his willingness to start a dialogue with those that disagree with him.
Did you read his speech about "finding a common ground" that was given this weekend to Notre Dame? Holy..good stuff.
A Fear of Flying - Thanks for continuing to put up with me... I hope I didn't rant too much.... I'm not mad at you, really.
I know it. ;) the only time I get ticked off at comments is when they're judgmental, virtrolic, and drive-by commentors are the worst. You're certainly not drive by, and I wouldn't call you judgmental or vitrolic either, just passionate.
A COUPLE OF THINGS....first of all dick cheyney is a ____....so any one is better than the old bunch...don't listen to lucy her advice is only worth a nickle.....no i don't mean that...i like her advice on food storage and she does quote our prophets....i was in england and got excellent health care, and i still WANT HEALTH CARE for everyone period.....i still get thrilled when big O speaks even though a lot of people say they are tirying of him...i won't curse anyone till the day they die, where is dallan when we need her
Yeah, you don't know me. I stumbled onto your blog through Rebecca and Nate's. I liked this post. I didn't realize what Obama's stance was on gay marriage -- good to hear.
You don't honestly think you can justify one of his positions with a soundbite do you? Obama is all about himself-- and who ever can help him, as he needs them. We have to continually watch our back; our nation is screwed.
