A big step for America

My reasons behind voting for Obama had nothing to do with color. I know that my friends and family did not vote for or against him because of it, either. But the fact that he is black, and the fact that he has been elected (no matter whether you agree with his politics or not) is a big thing.

I watched those crowds on TV when Obama gave his victory speech. The sheer disbelief, the overwhelming joy, and the hope apparent on the faces of many in the crowd... I am so glad. America is a place where everyone should be able to believe he or she can do anything, if they want it and work hard enough. That's what America is about.

I'm almost hesitant to ask this, but I'm wondering (sincerely) why we refer to our next president as black when his mother was white. Someone told me (remember, I live in the South) that in the "old days," a person who was 1/16 black was still black. Seems strange to me. I love the drawing that you posted and can't even imagine what this election means to generations of those who have suffered so much; at the same time, he's a president for all of us, black and white and everyone in-between.

yup, all of our president. But still... historic and amazing. For me, the fact that he is black (defined by how he looks, and how others percieve his racial identity) was always a little footnote to his candidacy, and why I thought he was such an amazing new thing for America. But watching his speech, and looking around on the internet, I've been moved by the historic nature of the first "black" president, too.

He is black. Just as almost all of the African-Americans I work with (I live in the DC area) are black and yet I would bet are more than 1/16 white. We're all colored, and someday I hope to see a time when the color of our skin won't mean a lick to anyone.

I'm sorry, Putz. People can be tactless sometimes... they think they're being funny, but really it's hurtful. I'm sorry you're taking some flack from your family.

I was personally impressed with his first press conference. He could have said that he was taking over immediately and, in many ways, I think the masses would have followed him, but I have a great respect for him setting down the law and attitude that Bush is still president. Whether you agree with Bush or not, he is the president right now, and Obama was right to respect that.

He also has a pleasant sense of humor and self-deprecation that is charming and pleasing. I still worry about some of his policies and he still needs to truly earn my support, but, as a man, I like him.

Maybe Palin will run in eight years... I might vote for her!
